Industrial water management

Industrial water management

A perfect non-stop supply. With raw materials and ZLD solutions

Industrial water management – with the big picture in mind

The industrial water management sector has changed over the last few years with the line between process water and wastewater becoming ever more fluid. The distinction between water supply and wastewater treatment is being influenced more and more by the principles of the circular economy. And that’s a good thing – for conserving the valuable resource water, for curbing climate change and for our customers. Why? Because we provide the full range of industrial water management services, put sustainability at the very core of our business and focus entirely on finding the best way to recover water. The best solution here is Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD), i.e. setting up closed loop systems so that all the water used in industrial processes and any recyclable materials in the water can be recovered and reused. That not only makes good business sense for our customers, it also demonstrably reduces carbon emissions. For example, when we use wastewater to produce climate-friendly biogas.

Chemicals

Evonik Catalysts India Ltd., Dombivli (India)

Zero Liquid Discharge technology (ZLD) for efficient water recycling
Evonik is one of the world’s leading specialty chemicals companies. Evonik Catalysts is a leading manufacturer and supplier of catalyst products – primarily for industrial and chemicals production processes. Evonik Catalyst India has nine production facilities across the world. One of them is located in Dombivli, a city situated on the edge of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The project
REMONDIS Aqua significantly upgraded and extended the wastewater treatment facility that was being used by Evonik Catalysts India Ltd at its plant in Dombivli. Thanks to its new Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility, all of the wastewater generated by the plant and its production operations can now be recycled. A sustainable system that enables the water to be efficiently reused and the salt to be recovered. Being the facility operator, REMONDIS Aqua is responsible for all operational, servicing and repair work (except the financing and construction of the facility).

The system
The plant’s various wastewater streams contain heavy metals and are treated in a number of closed loop systems. The following process stages are deployed to recycle the water and recover the salt: precipitation/flocculation, lamella clarifiers, sand and activated carbon filters, ion exchangers, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, sludge treatment, evaporative cooling towers, multi-stage evaporators and packing systems. A biological wastewater treatment stage is also used for some of the wastewater produced at the plant.

The benefits

  • A secure and reliable supply of water at the production plant
  • Highly automated wastewater treatment and salt recovery systems (REMONDIS’ Aquatic Mining®)
  • Environmental protection and comprehensive recovery of natural resources
  • Decoupling from the previously needed downstream wastewater treatment system
  • Financing, planning, construction and operations from just one company
Shin-Etsu PVC B.V., Rotterdam (Netherlands)

Safe treatment of wastewater for the Botlek Business Park
PVC producer Shin-Etsu manufactures ethylene dichloride (EDC) and vinyl chloride monomers (VCM) at its plant at the Botlek Business Park on the grounds of Europe’s largest deep water sea port in Rotterdam. The VCMs are used to produce PVC – a substance that can, in turn, be deployed to make a whole range of products such as pipes, window frames, cable sheathing and flooring. With a capacity to produce 620,000 tonnes, the facility in Botlek is the largest VCM manufacturing plant in Europe.

The project
With wastewater discharge limits expected to become ever more stringent, Shin-Etsu wished to have a sustainable, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility at its plant and commissioned a competent partner to extend its facilities and operate them on a long-term basis.

The system
The performance of the two-stage facility (a chemical-physical precipitation phase and a biological treatment phase) was enhanced by implementing a bespoke optimisation concept to meet Shin-Etsu’s exact needs. In addition, the facility requires fewer chemicals, generates less sludge and is now more flexible regarding the wastewater it can accept. By opting to implement REMONDIS’ certified plant operations concept, Shin-Etsu is also benefiting from the company’s know-how gathered from operating a whole range of industrial wastewater treatment facilities.

The benefits

  • Enhanced performance
  • Greater flexibility
  • Highest levels of availability
BASF Coatings GmbH, Münster-Hiltrup (Germany)

The project
REMONDIS Aqua is responsible for supplying BASF Coatings’ production plant in Münster-Hiltrup with fully demineralised, high purity water. This project began with us building a facility for demineralising municipal drinking water. We have been operating the facility since then and also handle all questions and issues concerning this area of the business.

The system
This innovative multi-stage process removes all substances from the drinking water that might have a negative impact on the production and quality of the coatings. We developed a technological concept specifically for this site. It integrates advanced technologies such as electro-deionisation (EDI) and membrane degasification to supplement conventional reverse osmosis.

The benefits

  • High water output
  • Fewer chemicals needed
  • Top quality water
  • Reliable, guaranteed supply
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Greater competitive edge

Food

DMK Deutsches Milchkontor GmbH, Altentreptow (Germany)

The project
DMK Deutsches Milchkontor GmbH runs a conventional dairy business and cheese production facility at its plant in Altentreptow. In 2006, this site was joined by a whey processing plant owned by wheyco GmbH – a company belonging to the DMK dairy corporation. The expansion of the site led to REMONDIS Aqua being commissioned with the task of extending and operating its wastewater treatment system. It was then awarded a second contract in 2008 to build and run a much-needed further extension to the wastewater treatment facility.

The system
Wastewater generated from cheese production and whey processing contains high levels of organic matter – making the treatment process particularly challenging. REMONDIS Aqua developed a cost-effective solution. During the initial treatment phase, an anaerobic process transforms a large percentage of the pollutants into biogas that is then used to generate electricity in REMONDIS’ own combined heat and power plant. The heat produced in the power plant is also used for the treatment process (combined heat and power) to ensure that the very most is made of the energy potential. What’s more, a further process – our patented REPHOS® system – was integrated into the facility to enable phosphorus to be recovered.

The benefits

  • Safe and reliable treatment of wastewater
  • A holistic concept that conserves natural resources and protects the environment
  • Greater cost-effectiveness
Oettinger Brauerei GmbH, Mönchengladbach (Germany)

The project
Oettinger Brewery has been producing a large part of its group’s wide range of products at its plant in Mönchengladbach since 2013. Every year, this site produces up to 2.3 million hectolitres of drinks. Oettinger Brauerei GmbH has the highest output of all German breweries making it the country’s largest beer brand. The company produces and sells a wide range of beers and soft drinks. With the business continuing to grow and wishing to implement more sustainable processes, it decided to have a new resource-friendly concept drawn up for its wastewater treatment system.

The system
The company’s focus here was on having a new wastewater treatment concept that made the treatment process more efficient, more stable and more cost-effective. It opted for REMONDIS Aqua’s RE2ENERGY® system – a high-tech process that transforms the contents in the wastewater into biogas in a fully automated anaerobic pre-treatment facility. For the most part, this procedure involves anaerobic wastewater treatment. Once the solid matter has been removed and the water neutralised, the wastewater undergoes anaerobic treatment in the RE2ENERGY® reactor – a process that simultaneously treats the wastewater and produces biogas. This pre-treated wastewater can then be discharged into the City of Mönchengladbach’s sewer system. The biogas is transferred straight back to the production plant where it is used in the boiler to produce the hot water needed to manufacture the drinks. This boiler had previously been run solely on natural gas. After it had been upgraded with an additional firing system, it can now be run on both natural gas and biogas – helping to significantly reduce the amount of natural gas needed by the plant.

The benefits

  • The system requires very little space thanks to optimum process technology
  • Sustainable wastewater treatment plus generation of carbon-neutral energy
  • Substitution of the primary energy previously used to generate steam for the production processes

Automotive

Daimler Truck AG, Mannheim (Germany)

The project
The foundry and metal-cutting division at the Truck AG plant in Mannheim generate highly complex wastewater streams containing emulsions. REMONDIS Aqua has been delivering services to a number of the plant’s divisions since 2013. It is our mission to meticulously examine and evaluate the water treatment results so that test facilities can be assessed and wastewater treatment systems optimised and extended.

The system
All of the wastewater streams generated by the plant’s production activities must be treated before they can be discharged into the City of Mannheim’s sewer system. REMONDIS Aqua deploys state-of-the-art treatment systems to do this work, such as ultrafiltration.

The benefits

  • Long-term, reliable wastewater treatment
  • A very cost-effective system
  • Safe wastewater treatment thanks to the use of modern technologies and high monitoring standards
MAN Truck & Bus SE, Munich (Germany)

The project
MAN Truck & Bus is one of the leading manufacturers of commercial vehicles in Europe and belongs to TRATON SE. It produces heavy goods vehicles at its main factory in Munich, which operates a production system with a high level of vertical integration. A new wastewater treatment facility was installed when the plant rebuilt the area used to paint the driver’s cabs. REMONDIS Aqua helped the company to commission and test the new facility while running the old facility at the same time. This ensured that there was a smooth switchover from the old to the new wastewater treatment facility.

The system
Wastewater containing oil as well as heavy metals and paint particles can be treated using various technologies such as modern membrane processes (ultrafiltration) and chemical-physical processes. In addition, the smooth functioning of the systems for the production of demineralised water (demineralised water) is ensured.

The benefits

  • A very cost-effective system
  • Guaranteed and reliable processes and operations
  • Improved infrastructure
  • Secure, long-term water supply and wastewater treatment
