REMONDIS Aqua: wastewater treatment and clean energy for Valensin.

Lünen. REMONDIS Aqua GmbH & Co. KG has been commissioned to build and operate an anaerobic wastewater pre-treatment facility by the Valensina Group. This state-of-the-art facility will also be used to recover energy in the form of biogas which will then be fed back into the production process.

Valensina GmbH, a company based in Mönchengladbach in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, produces and sells a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks that covers all segments of this market including the well-known premium fruit juice brands "Valensina" and "Hitchcock", the highly popular children's drink "Dreh + Trink" and the "Donath" brand from Germany's oldest fruit juice producer.

FSP Frischsaft FRISCHE Produktions GmbH, a fully owned subsidiary of Valensina GmbH, produces high quality chilled fruit juices and premium smoothies under its Valensina brand at its site in Mönchengladbach. The ever growing demand for freshly squeezed juices and smoothies has meant that the site's production capacity has had to be extended and a new concept developed for the plant's wastewater treatment.

REMONDIS Aqua's sophisticated anaerobic wastewater treatment process is to be used in the future in order to ensure that the wastewater at the site is treated in a resource-friendly way: its RE²ENERGY^® process guarantees highly efficient levels of treatment and makes the best possible use of the energy found in the contents of the wastewater. The biogas recovered from the treatment process is a "renewable energy" and will substitute the natural gas currently used in the production process to generate steam. By doing so, FSP will be able to achieve significant CO₂ savings.

"By recovering energy from the wastewater, the RE²ENERGY^® process guarantees top quality sustainable wastewater treatment thus fulfilling the Valensina Group's requirements concerning quality and resource efficiency in its production processes," explained Dr Matthias Krüger, project leader at REMONDIS.

This latest project from the fruit juice sector further underlines both the competence and extensive experience of REMONDIS Aqua in the food-processing industry. Back in 2006, the company successfully built and took over the operation of a facility, which also generates energy as part of the wastewater treatment process, for the WILD Group, a company producing fruit juices and concentrates in Valencia, a region famous for its orange groves.

REMONDIS Aqua was recently named one of the four "Water Companies of the Year" by the renowned branch magazine "GWI - Global Water Intelligence" in recognition of its performance on the international water resources market. The prize was handed over to Dr Lars Meierling from REMONDIS Aqua by Queen N?r al-Hussain of Jordan during a gala dinner held in Paris.
