Brandenburg. On 8th April 2008, a working group of the Ministry of Rural Development, Environment and Consumer Protection of the German state of Brandenburg passed a resolution enabling Wasserverband Lausitz Betriebsführungs GmbH (WAL-Betrieb) from Senftenberg, a subsidiary of REMONDIS Aqua GmbH & Co. KG, Lünen, to join the "Brandenburg Environmental Partnership".   
In 1999, the Brandenburg government set up this Environmental Partnership together with local industry and commerce in order to improve the framework conditions to achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly economic development in the state of Brandenburg.
Environmental protection is something that must be tackled by society as a whole. Simply creating new legal and tax regulations will not bring about the desired results. All those affected must play an active part - especially industry and commerce. For this reason, the Brandenburg Environmental Partnership is looking to promote a sense of self-responsibility among companies so that each company ensures that it conserves the volume of natural resources it uses as much as possible. Put in concrete terms this means: companies that choose voluntarily to introduce a certified environmental management system into their business will benefit from numerous administrative advantages such as shorter approval procedures or fewer inspections from environmental authorities.
Furthermore, the Environmental Partnership sees itself as a means to achieving close dialogue between the economy and the authorities. A permanent work group is responsible for coordinating the regular exchange of information on legislative proceedings affecting the economy. As a result, the environmental authorities can take the interests of industry and commerce based in Brandenburg into account when formulating and applying laws. This partnership should also lead to existing regulations being systematically simplified. Personal contacts play an important role here, too: those participating in the Environmental Partnership can build up a good relationship to those who make political decisions.
For Wasserverband Lausitz Betriebsführungs GmbH, a company active in water supply, wastewater treatment and related services, joining this group is an important step and it sees it as a mutually beneficial partnership with equal rights and obligations. "We have already made a decisive contribution with the successful certification in accordance with the quality and environmental management system - for customer services and for protecting the environment," commented Marten Eger, managing director of WAL-Betrieb.
